2016 MTV Video Music Awards
On Sunday, August 28, the 2016 MTV VMAs were held at Madison Square Garden for the first time in many years. The show was highlighted by Rihanna’s four medley performances leading up to her receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which was presented to her by her rumored boyfriend, Drake (we all thought he would propose to her on stage). Other notable performers included Beyonce, Britney Spears (for the first time since 2007), Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Future, Nick Jonas and Ty Dolla $ign, and The Chainsmokers and Halsey.
Beyonce stole the night, winning eight awards, including Video of the Year, and giving us a taste of a live rendition of her visual album, Lemonade. Other notable moments included Kanye West’s four minutes of freedom, where he gave one of his infamous rants (proclaiming his place in history with the likes of Walt Disney and Steve Jobs) and premiered his newest music video for his single, Fade, off of his latest album, The Life of Pablo, as well as appearances from Olympic champions Michael Phelps and the Final Five US gymnasts.
Overall, this year’s show was one for the books, full of constant entertainment, creativity, innovation, and surprises. We always look forward to these type of award shows, and can’t wait to see what MTV has in store next Summer!
